Katarina Witt started skating when she was five. Her success allowed her to show her skills and get into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school for gifted kids. Coach Jutta was also at the school. Witt made her breakthrough season in 1982 when she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Following that, she started dominating the sport with the grace and elegance she displayed. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt won a close battle to take home the women's figure skating gold medal. After four years, that she was able to claim an additional competitive race. Free skaters lost however she was awarded the gold medal for her figure that was compulsory as well as her program was short. Witt became the first female to be crowned champion in male and female figure skating in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt, who made it big in film as an actor, returned for figure skating, competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games 1994. Although she didn't win a medal, Witt delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. Witt was inducted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
